An all-inclusive technical training is under progress at Bushoftu on global Environmental multilateral agreements. The training is schaduled from 28-29 Dec. 2018. Trainees from answerable institutions to the commission, regional offices, multilateral agreements focal points and technical experts from the commission are taking part in the training. The purpose of the training is to build an able and up-to-dated negotiators team that would help to serve our national interest regarding global environmental negotiations.
Speaking at the opening of the training, Mr. Nigusu Lemma, Director General of the Bio diversity and Climate Change sector of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Commission explained that “Our globe has faced an increasing treat of natural and man made crisis that resulted in the distraction of our bio diversity and other natural resources. Due to this reason said Mr. Negusu, the global community has come together and drafted diffrent binding environmental multilateral laws and policies. The director also mensioned in his speech that although the world have varities of environmental laws and policies in place, it is continiously wittnessed that nation states stayed restrained to act as of the global environmental demands.
The need to 'fast and sustainable development' is mentioned commonly by member states for their relactant responses to environmental needs. However, those who are continiously affected by environmental disastors and advocators are continiously push states to be punctual and act responsibly inorder to make our planet a safe heven. For this end, periodical and continious negotiations are tabled on diffrent environmental issues.
Ethiopia as a member state has entered in to and started implementing the global environmental multilateral agreements since 1992 G.C. Among the global environmental multilateral agreements ethiopia has endorsed, ratified and act up on are;
- The Rio Convention (The UN framework convention on climate change (UNFCCC)).
- Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) and;
- United Nations Convention on Combating Desertification (UNCCD).
Furthermore, Ethiopia has adopted and ratified other conventions related to wildlife conservation and the management of hazardous chemicals and wastes.
Different papers and studies are presented on the training. Tittles that entail background to multilateral environmental agreements like;
® United Nations Framework on climate change convention (UNFCCC),
® United Nations convention on desertification
(UNCCD),
® Convention on Biodiversity (CBD),
® Stockholm Convention,
® Montreal Convention,
® Rotterdam Convention and,
® Basel Conventions are amonges the others.
Following the presentations, a wide range of ideas has been shared among the participants on the importance, continuation and ways of maximizing the effectiveness of dealing with negociations. In conclusion participants agree that we as a nation has to enhance our national capacity of negociation of environmental multilateral agreements to better achieve our national environmental vision.
