An assembly that discuss on the Ethiopian National Adaptation Plan (NAP) has took place at the Radison Blue Hotel in Addis Ababa. The main objectives of the assembly are:-
- To update developement partners on Ethiopian's NAP process,
- To discuss the way forward for the NAP process, with a focus on moving in to implementation and,
- To discuss priorities for support for the NAP process going forward.
The assembly has been organized in collaboration bettween the Ethiopian Environment, Forest and climate change commission and developement partners like NAP Global Network, the international institute of research and development (IISD), USAID and others.
Speaking at the opeaning of the assembly, prfo. Fekadu Beyene, Commissioner for the Ethiopian Environment, Forest and Climate Change Commission explained that "Ethiopia is not as such new to national adaptation programmes to over come climate change effects as all our national developement policies has adaptation componants benth under." Commissioner also tell that this new iniciative will however, help us to coordinate and cenergize national develepement efforts and resources in a more focused and integrated way". Commissioner also saied that "Ethiopia is ready to move forward to NAP implementation and calls up all develepement partners, sectotoral organizations and other stakeholders to contribute for it's success.
According to Asrat Virgu who is the NAP advisor to the Ethiopian Environment, Forest and Climate Change Commission, the Ethiopian NAP will coast up to 6 billion USD per annual and is designed to be implemented for the next 20 years.
As it is apparent, the global socity react the implementation of the Paris climate agreement through designing strategies that will help to over come climate change related challenges. Ethiopia in this regard has been championing to design and implement initiatives in its national development plans through its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).
Following this global climate change response, Ethiopia has already in place and implemented short term, medium term and long term strategies and plans to respond to changes related to climate change. In 2011 for example, Ethiopia has ratified and entered it to action its climate resilient green economy strategy (CRGE). Before CRGE however, Ethiopia has been practicing two strategies pertaining climate Adaptation strategies. The NAPA (The National Adaptation programme of action) and the Ethiopian program me of adaptation to climate change (EPACC) are of these practical moves. The comprehensive national strategy that aimed to follow the climate resilient green economy strategy (CRGE) that encompasses both mitigation and adaptation options however, has been entered in to practice by 2011. NAP-Ethiopia is therefore, now designed to address climate actions related to adaptation options in order to make an adaptive and resilient circumstances in Ethiopian and is a way to and this is a new phase of embarking up on a new era of more coordinated and integrated actions to climate change adaptation.
