Experts segment of the AMCEN conference continued its discussion covering diffrent agenda items.

The experts segment of the the 19th session of the AMCEN that commenced today at the Skylight International Hotel in Addis Ababa resumes by covering different agenda items and topics.
In the Agenda Item four that deals with the progress in the implementation of the AMCEN decisions of the 18th ordinary session for example has presented progresses made regarding Africa Green Stimulus Programme, African Forum of Environment Protection Agencies, Critical minerals and their role in energy transitions in Africa, Phasing out of open burning of waste in Africa and issues related to collaboration with African Ministers of Finance and Economic Planning.
Regarding the issues related to addressing critical energy transition, it was stated that Africa's future is in how it harnesses and add value to its minerals without undermining the environment and people and also on the need for investing in research and inclusive partnership. On the agenda related to Phasing out of open burning of waste in Africa, African countries committed to reducing open dumping and burning of waste in Africa and to promote the use of waste as a resource for value and job creation.
The agenda that focuses on Africa’s Climate Summit which will be co-hosted by Kenya and the African Union Commission and to be take place from 4 to 6 September, 2023 in Nairobi has been delt with. Preparations for COP28 has also been presented by the chair of the African Group of Negotiators on climate change (AGN); Mr. Ephraim Shitima with a special attention on the outcomes of COP27 and an overview, analysis and preparations for COP28 that will take place from 30 November to 12 December 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The last topic of the climate change agenda item is presentation on GGGI Ethiopia Country Program which is presented by Okechukwu Daniel Ogbonnaya, country director of Ethiopia office. In the presentation it is highlighted GGGI’s support in Providing Delivery Partner Advisory support to the Ministry of Planning and Development of Ethiopia under the GCF Readiness, completion of the Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) for Ethiopia, ongoing supports related with development of coordination and institutional capacity for green climate finance and also Solar Irrigation Pumping Systems project that has been implemented.
In addition to the discussion made in Plenary setting, two side events are also held on the topics, ”Amplifying meaningful youth engagement at UNEA 6 and Africa Climate Summit” and “Just transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy for all”
On Amplifying Meaningful Youth Engagement at the African Youth Climate Assembly and UNEA-6: The side event discussed about the preparation about the African Youth Climate Summit on how to meaningfully engage young people which will happen few days before the African Climate Summit in Nairobi.
The Panelist reflects on the importance of engaging young people in the decision-making process and amplify on their needs to learn the power of strategic engagement and collaboration in existing framework. They have expressed that the Youth need to know the existing processes of climate governance and catch the timeline of the process so that their inputs can be part of the process. The African Youth Climate Assembly goal is to embed youth into existing climate frameworks and shift the focus to not only policy but an action-oriented declaration that is chaptered across all African states.
On the side event of a "just Transition from fossil fuels to renewable Energy for All", the report presented regarding energy transition has reflected that "African Countries should unite to push for energy and food sovereignty inorder to reduce dependence on imports, cater to genuine basic needs and build relative to imports". It’s reflected that the foundation for just transition is more of resilient food, energy, and industrial systems. Day two of the technical segment would be continued focusing on other agendas adopted at the 19th AMCEN session.
